We are all searching for love. Love is that joyous feeling of connection we get when we understand that we are inextricably tied to something in the universe. Love is what we feel when we gaze upon our beloved. This is a circular argument for love, but love is circular. Love is not an isolated phenomenon, it is a relational aspect of life.

We instinctively understand what love is not. It is not stepping over the homeless person laying strung out on the sidewalk, it is not a hit-and-run accident leaving a child maimed, it is not the mocking words of a presidential debate.

Some people say that love is the opposite of hate. Hate is the expression of fear through which ignorance manifests. Fear is forgetting, either willfully or unconsciously, that we are all connected, that we all share a very similar experience of being alive. All of us have experienced fear in our bellies, and tried to soothe that fear with a balm of anger. Anger is fear tricking the mind into believing that the problem is out there, rather than in here, deep within our consciousness.

Why do we search for connection? Our minds are hardwired to see patterns, in order to help us survive in a hostile environment. And to be sure, the world does not love us, regardless…
