The best you can hope for

a free verse poem

People came to my house when I died

but then left

after all the refreshments

were gone.

Most of us,

when we find out we’re not going to make it,

start to panic.

The best you can hope for is a good dog

that wags her tail

on lazy Sunday afternoons.
