There is No Such Thing as a Normal Day

Today so many of us wake up thinking “Ho Hum. Life is back to normal after a long relaxing weekend.”

As a matter of fact, that is the opposite way to look at this day that you have unfurling in front of you like a fern frond..

The problem with us idiot humans is that we are trained at an early age to take everything for granted. We are trained that life operates in a linear manner, and so much of what we create as humans is constrained by this harmful way of thinking and being.

Life doesn’t travel from point A to point B in a linear fashion. No, life is a circle, which also includes the entire process of death and dying and decay.

We can’t win it because we already won it by being born. We actually get to be alive for a little bit.

There is nothing to gain from spending an entire lifetime trying to win something. But there is something to gain by creating a great life.

What is the difference?

Creating a great life involves never waking up and thinking “Ho hum.” Creating a great life involves waking up and thinking “Today might be the best day of my life, or the worst. It doesn’t matter, because what matters is how I act and what I do. What matters is that my loved one is next to me and I am healthy and ready to fulfill my purpose in life.”

I don’t believe in false positivity. Today could be your best or worst day, but most likely it will be a pretty normal day, whatever the fuck that means.

There is no such thing as a normal day!

Every day is full of possibilities, beyond what our puny imaginations might think on this morning after a long weekend.

I truly believe in the power of positive thinking to create a great life, and I also believe in the power of negative thinking to create a shitty life.

It all starts within us. Each thought we have or action we take is a seed that can take root and grow into a weed or a flower.

So today, we can acknowledge that we feel disappointed that the weekend is over — that is fine. But we can also go ahead and realize that each day has a full allotment of potential for greatness and enjoyment. Just as much as any holiday weekend day.

We have all had those really shitty days on a vacation and those really awesome days just doing the same old, same old.

We can’t force our will upon a day. It will do with us as it may.

We can try to organize a day to be productive, but there is always the chance that our car will blow up, or our septic system gets backed up, or someone somewhere will need our help.

There are a million things that can happen and very little point in getting tense about them before they do. Stress decreases the greatness of our lives. Mindfulness increases the greatness.

But the core practice is to simply stop thinking about life as a single line, going from point A to point B, and began to think of it as a circle, a spiral in three dimensions, branching out into as many beautiful patterns as we can imagine and we can create.
