We must act as if every moment was a gift

“As each day arises, welcome it as the very best day of all, and make it your own possession. We must seize what flees.”

Take a moment.

Most likely right now there is nothing wrong with your life, as it is.

This is the weird truth that permeates our every day existence.

When you look at an average life, there is not much that is terribly bad.

Sometimes horrible things happen. That is true.

But then we get on with life.

I’ve known many people who have experienced terrible things. I’ve also known people who have contracted fatal diseases and died. In general, most of these people have a much better perspective on life than your average person.

That is because they can see that our day to day so-called boring existences are an incredible gift.

An incredible gift from the universe.

Some of them have passed on. But before they passed on they grasped onto life and sucked the marrow from its bones.

They could see the end.

We need to be aware of the end up ahead. It will come at some point.

We can’t pretend that this will go on forever.

If we play pretend, then before we know it our entire life will have flashed before our eyes. We will have missed it all.

But if we began to seize the day, every day can become an entire lifetime.

“When you wake up in the morning, tell yourself: the people I deal with today will be meddling, ungrateful, arrogant, dishonest, jealous and surly. They are like this because they can’t tell good from evil. But I have seen the beauty of good, and the ugliness of evil, and have recognized that the wrongdoer has a nature related to my own — not of the same blood and birth, but the same mind, and possessing a share of the divine. And so none of them can hurt me. No one can implicate me in ugliness. Nor can I feel angry at my relative, or hate him. We were born to work together like feet, hands and eyes, like the two rows of teeth, upper and lower. To obstruct each other is unnatural. To feel anger at someone, to turn your back on him: these are unnatural.

-Marcus Aurelius

How many times do we go through the motions of the same pattern over and over? And yet, it is simple enough to let go of the idea that everything is the same, when in reality it never is.

Every day is different, and yet we have mesmerized ourselves into thinking that every day is the same old thing.

So, in order to really take advantage of our senses, we must act as if every moment was a gift.
