It’s scary to think of a cold, heartless universe that contains no meaning.

This is the burden of consciousness. Our lives are characterized by a stream of fears and desires, from birth to death.

Thus sentience is the seed of our search for meaning.

Without sentience, a thing does not have fears or desires, and therefore no need for meaning.

A volcano doesn’t feel the need to believe in an objective moral framework because it doesn’t have any consciousness (as far as we know). The same goes for a waterfall, or a star.

These things don’t wish for a better future, or shrink from the pain of loss.

As life develops from the complexity of matter, pathways of understanding and interacting with the world begin to form.

When our brains became complex enough for abstract thought, human beings began to conceive of the supernatural. We began to find deeper meaning behind the patterns that we observed. Spirituality became second nature to us. We had sparse knowledge of the mechanics…
